 Join us for an outdoor adventure at different locations in York County each week as we explore to see what birds are in the area.  These are informal walks and anyone with an interest in nature is welcome to attend, regardless of skill level or membership status.  In fact, these walks are an excellent opportunity to learn about birding and nature. There are always some more experienced members on the walk who are  eager to share their knowledge.  No registration required.

Bird Walk Schedule for August 2022

 Thursday, Aug 4th at Nixon County Park
  • Meeting Location: Lower parking lot near visitor's center
  • Time: 7:30 AM
  • Notes: 

Thursday, Aug 11th at Heritage Rail Trail, Glatfelter Station
  • Meeting Location: Parking lot near Route 214 on Glatfelter Station Road.
  • Time: 7:30 AM
  • Notes: This walk has a good diversity of habitats with a consistently high number of species.

Saturday, Aug 20th at Black Rock Flats, Codorus State Park
  • Meeting Location: Black Rock Flats Boat Launch Parking Lot. - Black Rock Road.
  • Time: 7:30 AM
  • Notes: This is a Saturday trip!! The main target is shorebirds. Lake Marburg is lowered annually for use by the paper mill at Spring Grove. This is a great time to sit and watch for wading birds. Bring a lawn chair. If the water level is not down, we can walk The Mary Ann Furnace Trail ½ mile south on Blooming Grove Road.

Thursday, Aug 25th at Rocky Ridge County Park
  • Meeting Location: Meet at the first parking lot on the left.
  • Time: 7:30 AM
  • Notes: The last week of August usually marks the beginning of fall migration. Target will be early warblers. 

Bird Walk Schedule for September 2022

Thursday, Sept 1st at Pinchot State Park
  • Meeting Location: Conewago Day Use area near the bird feeders (in the parking lot turn left before the lake and left at the end).
  • Time: 7:30 AM
  • Notes: Target -Fall Migrants​

Thursday, Sept 8th at Hellam Hills
  • Meeting Location:  Parking is on Chimney Rock Road at the intersection of Furnace Road.
  • Time: 7:30 AM
  • Notes: This large woodland preserve attracts fall warblers

Saturday, Sept 16th at Rocky Ridge Hawk Watch
  • Meeting Location:  Park at the rear lot and walk north along the power-line trail to the viewing platform.
  • Time: Noon to 4pm
  • Notes: This day will be well timed to look for large movements of Broad-winged Hawks. 

Thursday, Sept 29th at Lake Williams
  • Meeting Location: South George Street parking lot.
  • Time: 7:30 AM
  • Notes: ​



Other Information:
  • The bird walks typically last 2-3 hours, but you are welcome to leave at any time - these are informal walks.  
  • No registration is required -  Just show up and bird.
  • All walks are weather-permitting. Cancellations will be announced on the York Bird Chat on WhatsApp or you can call Chuck Berthoud at (717) 608-2614
  • Be prepared to do some mild hiking on unpaved trails at most locations.
