Site Description: The boardwalk at Iron Stone Hill Road is likely one of the most heavily birded sites in York County and with good reason. The habitat there is a forest and wetland edge that often attracts a variety of migrants waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds. Local eBirders have submitted more checklists at this location than any other in York County. Habitat near the boardwalk structure has changed due to invasive vegetation and lake draining. Fluctuating water levels in Lake Redman’s back waters (the location of the boardwalk) have created mudflat habitats that have produced some great birds in the past. Short-billed Dowitcher, Black-necked Stilt, Red-necked Phalarope, Tricolored Heron, Snowy Egret, and American Avocet have all been recorded there in the last ten years.
The rest of Lake Redman including the area by Sparton Road is good for waterfowl, gulls, and others. Caspian Terns, Bonaparte’s Gulls, and Forster’s Terns are typically viewed here each season during migration periods in April-May. In dry years or during drawdowns American Pipit, Dunlin, Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, and other birds have been viewed feeding on the mudflats at Sparton Road just north of the parking area along the lake.
