when Dr. Dan Klem, Jr. will enlighten us on an important topic in his presentation titled

"Saving Billions of Birds From Windows:
An Essential Conservation Issue for Birds and People"

Except for habitat destruction, a vast and growing amount of evidence supports the claim that collisions with sheet glass and plastic in residential, commercial, and educational buildings cause the deaths of more birds than any other human-associated avian mortality factor. The toll on bird populations is estimated in the billions worldwide. Conservation, ethical, and legal reasons justify preventing these unintended and unwanted fatalities that responsible human action can minimally mitigate and ideally eliminate. The speaker will provide an overview on this compelling environmental topic having implications for academic disciplines that include: among others, architecture and engineering, biology (especially conservation, ecology, and environmental science), business and economics, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology. Moreover, the current state of knowledge and the most effective means of preventing bird-window collisions will be presented. Additionally, he will summarize his and his co-author's most recent scientific publication forthcoming (March 2024) in the Wilson Journal of Ornithology: Evidence, consequences, and angle of strike of bird-window collisions. From the direct observations of 1,356 strikes, this study documents that 50% of bird-window collisions left no evidence, most frontal (84%) and glancing (86%) blows resulted in no sign of impairment, a more modest number of frontal (14%) and glancing (12%) hits resulted in birds being stunned, and few frontal (2%) and glancing (2%) hits were immediate fatalities. The interpreted results of this study upgrades the estimated annual window-kill mortality in the US alone to minimally 1.28 billion to 3.46 billion to as high as 2.56 billion to 6.92 billion; and predictably billions more worldwide.

Speaker Biography: Daniel Klem, Jr. is Sarkis Acopian Professor of Ornithology and Conservation Biology at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Among other diverse avian investigations, for 50 years (half a century) and continuing to the present, he studies, writes, and teaches about the threat that sheet glass and plastic pose to birds. No other scientist comprehensively has studied and published research results documenting and evaluating the means to prevent this human-associated avian mortality factor. He is motivated by available and growing evidence that bird-window collisions are an important wildlife conservation, building industry, legal, and animal welfare issue for birds and people worldwide. His continuing goal is to make the human-built environment safe for birds, and his latest contribution explaining and providing solutions for the window threat to birds is a new book (2021): Solid Air, Invisible Killer: Saving Billions of Birds from Windows.

" Close Encounters

Pennsylvania Raptors"

Patrick will have several LIVE raptors at this presentation. Bring the family to see these fascinating birds!

Birds of Prey
Presented by Miller’s Wildlife
Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a bird of prey? These
mighty hunters, also known as raptors, are specialized to catch their own meals–
but the way each species does it is unique! During our Birds of Prey program, we
will take you under our wing and teach you about the distinct characteristics of a
variety of raptors. From “feathered missiles” to “wolves of the sky,” this program
will take your understanding of raptors to new heights!
Miller’s Wildlife was founded in 2019 by Patrick Miller. Our mission is to
foster an appreciation for all things wild by bringing the “wild” to you! We offer a
variety of educational programs with a shared focus on wildlife conservation. Each
program features a selection of ambassador animals who help us share the story of
their wild counterparts. Join us to discuss the unique ecology of each animal—that
is, the way each animal interacts with their ecosystem—and discover ways that
YOU can help them in the wild! By using knowledge, humor, and ecological
enthusiasm, we hope to inspire others to protect the natural world!

GETTYSBURG!

Fifteen Audubon members and friends joined Gettysburg Battlefield tour guide Dave Weaver on Saturday, January 23, 2021, for our annual Winter Wildlife Watching Tour. The weather was a brisk and breezy 30 degrees under blue skies. Though it appears the birds were smarter than our group, we did get glimpses of red-headed woodpeckers, kestrels, red-tailed hawks, turkey vultures, and starlings. Our guide took us to 4 choice locations for viewing the battlefield, but the birds were scarce. However, it was wonderful to spend a couple of hours with birder friends... socially distanced and masked!

CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT FOR KIDS

York Audubon Society will hold our annual Christmas Bird Count for Kids in conjunction with Nixon County Park on Friday, Dec. 27, 2024. Participants will meet at the Nixon Park Nature Center, and from there we will leave in smaller groups to walk through different areas of the park and tally any birds that are observed. Everyone will meet back at the Nature Center after about an hour of walking to come up with a grand total of sightings, which will then be reported and used in National Audubon's 125th Christmas Bird Count. Counts are then used in scientific studies to track bird populations worldwide.

Please call Nixon Park to register (717-428-1961) so that we can plan to have enough birding guides available.
(Also, adult volunteers are needed.
Please contact Bernie Frick at 717-843-6675.)

Middle Creek WMA

for the

Snow Geese migration

We will meet at 7:30am at Galleria mall parking lot near Red Robin to car pool

Middle Creek is a near 6,000 acre Wildlife Management Area managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission primarily for waterfowl, grassland nesting birds, and wetland dependent species. Middle Creeks hosts an interactive visitor center, seasonal wildlife driving tour, and over twenty miles of hiking trails. Other opportunities are endless for the outdoor enthusiast such as wildlife viewing, special hunts, and other forms of outdoor recreation. Middle Creek is one of just six Globally Important Bird Areas in the state.

Every year between mid-February and mid-March, one of Pennsylvania’s most amazing natural phenomena occurs: the Middle Creek snow geese migration.
During this time, hundreds of thousands of snow geese migrate through Pennsylvania and stop briefly at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area in northern Lancaster county. Along with them, are tens of thousands of tundra swans and Canada geese.
This snow geese migration makes for an amazing event that really has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. Come join us and see this spectacular sight!

ALICE FRICK

Picture
York Audubon Society lost a valuable member of our organization late this spring. Alice Frick succumbed to cancer, a battle she valiantly fought for 20 years. She had a dedication to the natural wonders all around her, especially the birds. Alice and Bernie shared countless outdoor adventures while camping and hiking and exploring parts of the U.S. and beyond. Alice enjoyed sharing her vast library with others, and teaching us about the latest birding technology.

For the last few years, Alice was our Conservation chairperson. She volunteered, along with Bernie, to work with PA Audubon leaders on a variety of projects with school children at Hannah Penn School, William Penn High School, and Kiwanis Lake. Alice established the annual Christmas Bird Count for Kids at Nixon Park, recruited Andrew Wolfgang to be our YAS vice-president , and hosted lunch for all of the Christmas Bird Count participants from our organization. Each autumn, Alice willingly helped with our annual bird seed distribution day.

Alice and Bernie invited the executive board to meet monthly in their home a few years ago, saving our organization hundreds of dollars in room rental fees at the church. She graciously served refreshments as well during those meetings. She readily shared ideas for speakers and field trips. She and Bernie gave some delightful presentations to our group during monthly meetings, and led several field trips to local birding hotspots.

Alice remained a true friend to York Audubon Society, bequeathing a generous amount of money toward our endeavors. We remain ever grateful to Alice Frick.

Creating Habitat for Butterflies"

to be presented by Debra Carman via Zoom

The presentation will cover the habitat elements necessary for the survival of butterflies from egg to adult. The important ecological role that our native plants and butterflies play in food webs, especially concerning nesting birds, will be highlighted. Multiple species of butterflies commonly occurring in PA will be profiled. Deb’s informational sheet “Butterfly Larval Host Plant List” will be available, along with other related topics.

(Deb has also informed us of the following resource: The Native Plant Habitat Team has partnered with
C3 (Community Conservation Committee) and they have posted all of the reference sheets that are offered on their website.  The web address is https://c3conserve.com/. All of the sheets are under “Resources” in pdf form. They are very easy to access.)

Debra Carman is a Penn State Master Gardener in York County, Native Plant Habitat Team Committee Chair, Butterfly and Moth Habitat Specialist, avid eBirder! Deb’s mission is to inspire others to make positive environmental changes in their gardening practices. Butterflies are excellent examples to show the complex connections between wild creatures and native plants. Through the natural attraction which people feel for butterflies, Deb teaches the importance of creating environmentally friendly habitats with native plants that foster food webs for all wildlife.
