in York County
 Join us for an outdoor adventure at different locations in York County each week as we explore to see what birds are in the area.  These are informal walks and anyone with an interest in nature is welcome to attend, regardless of skill level or membership status.  In fact, these walks are an excellent opportunity to learn about birding and nature. There are always some more experienced members on the walk who are  eager to share their knowledge.  No registration required.

Bird Walk Schedule February 2025

 
Saturday, Feb 22nd - Robert A. Kinsley Nature Preserve (Hellam Hills)
  • Meeting Location:    Parking is on Chimney Rock Road at the intersection of Furnace Road.
  • Time: 7:30 AM - 9:30
  • Leader: David A. Notes: Formerly known as the Hellam Hills Preserve.  Main targets include early migrant warblers and vireos.
 
Thursday, Aug 29th  - Heritage Rail Trail, Brillhart Station
  • Meeting Location:  Meet at the Heritage Rail Trail Brillhart Station Parking at intersection of Days Mill Rd and Brillhart Station Rd.
  • Time: 7:30 AM - 9:30
  • Notes: Leader: Chuck B.   ​

Bird Walk Schedule September 2024

Saturday,Sept 7th  - Spring Valley County Park - "Folk Life" House Parking Lot
  • Meeting Location: From Potosi Rd, continue straight on Potosi Rd after passing Crest Rd.  Turn right at first gravel road (Maintance Rd #5) and continue past folk life house to first parking lot.
  • Time: 7:30 am - 9:30am
  • Notes: : Leader: David A. - Prime area for migrant warblers

Thursday, Sept 12th  - Pinchot State Park - Conewago Day Use Are
  • Meeting Location:  Conewago Day Use area near the bird feeders (in the parking lot turn left before the lake and left at the end).
  • Time: 7:30 AM - 9:30
  • Notes: Leader: Jady C.

Saturday, Sept 21st  Rocky Ridge County Park - Come for the Warblers, Stay for the Hawks!
  • Meeting Location: Hidden Laurel Picnic Area Parking Lot (Aka "The Ballfield" lot) - This is the first parking lot on your left after entering the park. 
  • Time: 7:30 AM - 9:30 am - Then drop in 
  • Notes: Warbler walk will be from 7:30 to 9:30 am.  If you do not attend the warbler walk, feel free to drop in anytime between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Hawk Watch Platform. This week is usually good for seeing large numbers of migrating Broad-winged Hawks. Leader: David A

​Thursday, Sept 26th   - UPMC Hospital (aka "Hawk Lake")
  • Meeting Location:  UPMC Wellness Trail. - From Rt 30, head north on Roosevelt Ave.  Turn left at Innovation Drive and take the first left  into the parking lot and stay left to the rear of parking lot where the Wellness Trail sign is.
  • Time: 7:30am
  • Notes: This 2-mile paved trail has a variety of habitats, including wetlands with cattails. Leader: Chuck B

Saturday, Oct 5th  - Susquehanna Riverlands State Park
  • Meeting Location: Meet at the first parking area on the right after entering River Farm Rd.
  • Time: 8:00 am - 10:00 am
  • Notes: : Leader: David A

Thursday, Oct 10th  - Lake Williams Boat Launch
  • Meeting Location:  Meet near the bathrooms at the Lake Williams boat launch parking lot off of Water St
  • Time: 8:00 am - 10:00 am
  • Notes: Leader:  We will be looking for late migrant songbirds and early migrating waterfowl.

Saturday, Oct 19th Codorus State Park: Mary Ann Furnace Trail
  • Meeting Location: Meet the Mary Ann Furnace trailhead parking lot on Black Rock Road.
  • Time: 9:00 am - 11:00am
  • Notes: Join Native Plant Specialist Ryan O'Meara as he leads us on a bird walk and informs us about the native plants in the area and their relationship with the insects and birds.

Thursday,Oct 24th   - Lake Redman
  • Meeting Location:  Parking Lot by Boardwalk (off of Iron Stone Hill Rd just south of Hess Farm Rd)
  • Time: 8:00 am - 10:00 am
  • Notes: Chuck B.

Saturday, Nov 2nd  - Pinchot State Park - Beaver Creek and Quaker Race Area
  • Meeting Location: Meet at the Boat Mooring Area #1 (aka - Beaver Creek Trailhead Parking Lot) - Located off of Rosstown Rd (Rt 177)
  • Time: 8:00 am - 10:00 am
  • Notes: : Leader: David A.  We will scan the Beaver Creek Inlet for waterfowl and then drive to Quaker Race Day Area to look for waterfowl on the main lake and finish with a walk. 

Thursday,Nov 7th  - Nixon Park
  • Meeting Location:  Richard Nixon Park Visitor's Center Parking Lot.
  • Time: 8:00 am - 10:00 am
  • Notes: Leader Chuck B

Saturday, Nov 16th @ West Manheim Township Park
  • Meeting Location: This park is located south of Hanover near Sheppard-Myers Reservoir.  The entrance is off of St Bartholomew Rd
  • Time: 8:00 am - 10:00 am
  • Notes: Leader: Evan V

Thursday, Nov 21st   - TBD
  • Meeting Location:  .
  • Time: 8:00 am - 10:00 am

Other Information:
  • The bird walks will last last 2 hours, but you are welcome to stay longer or leave at any time - these are informal walks.  
  • No registration is required -  Just show up and bird.
  • All walks are weather-permitting. Cancellations will be announced on the York Bird Chat on WhatsApp or you can call or text Chuck Berthoud at (717) 608-2614
  • Be prepared to do some mild hiking on unpaved trails at most locations.
