Introduction

York County offers a wealth of nature to explore.  Each season presents its own unique opportunities of discovery.  Knowing what to look for, where, and when are key factors in observing and appreciating the rhythmic cycles that occur within the natural world.

As of 2021, there have been a total of 295 different species of birds reported in York County (on eBird).  With a lot of effort, teamwork, knowledge, skill, and luck; it is quite possible for an individual to see 200+ different species of birds in York County over the course of one year.

This guide is meant to be a companion to the York County Birding Map (created by Andrew Wolfgang) available on the York Audubon Society website.  The Birding Map shows the locations of popular York County birding sites with detailed descriptions of those sites.  This guide attempts to summarize the movement of birds in York County as the year progresses.  In other words, it is a month-by-month breakdown highlighting which types of birds are on the move, when they are moving, and where to look for them.
